MODERNIZATION OF THE “TWIN DAM” SYSTEM IN

The “Twin Dam” system at Corongiu was constructed upstream of the original dam which was built in 1896 to provide drinking water to the city of Cagliari. The “higher” of the two dams with its bigger basin discharges excess water into the smaller “lower” dam which in turn under certain conditions would overflow. This emergency situation led to the need to enlarge the spillway of the second dam in order to adapt it against such overload conditions. Over a two year period commencing in 2006, Vortex Hydra successfully designed and constructed the civil and electromechanical works including control systems for the new spillway installed on both dams.

The "lower" dam was ‘cut’ on its left hand side to accommodate a new larger spillway that was equipped with two flap gates (8m wide x 6m high). The flap gates which are normally in a ‘closed’ mode are actuated by a pair of synchronous laterally hinged hydraulic cylinders. The opening position is automatically controlled by means of a management PLC system, which maintains a constant water level upstream. It also can be manually operated. The results of the improvements were tested over a time frame of one year, in both normal and in adverse conditions, so simulating the "overload" of water from the upstream dam.
